Always read the installation instructions supplied with your order carefully before starting installation, as these may vary depending on configuration and selected options.
Refer to the separate manual for installation and connection of the control system.
Always follow the specific operation and maintenance instructions supplied with your order. These may vary depending on model, material and selected options.
Operation
- The hatch forms part of the building’s smoke ventilation system and is activated automatically via the control system.
- It can also be used for comfort ventilation within the building.
- Always ensure that the opening area is free from obstructions before activation.
Maintenance
- Functional testing should be carried out at least once per year or in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Regularly check that the hatch opens and closes correctly during testing.
- Inspect actuators, hinges and mechanical components, and keep the unit clean from dirt and corrosion.
What is a smoke vent roof hatch?
A smoke vent roof hatch is an opening roof unit designed to remove smoke and heat in the event of a fire. By ventilating smoke, it improves visibility and supports safe evacuation and firefighting operations.
What is the difference between a smoke vent and a smoke exhaust ventilator?
The terms are often used interchangeably. The technical term in standards is NSHEV (Natural Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilator), but “smoke vent” or “smoke hatch” is commonly used in everyday language.
What does CE marking mean for a smoke vent?
CE marking means the product complies with EU construction product regulations and that its performance has been tested and verified. For smoke vents, this typically means compliance with relevant standards such as EN 12101-2.
What is EN 12101-2?
EN 12101-2 is the European standard for natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilators (NSHEVs), such as roof smoke vents. It defines requirements and test methods for:
- Aerodynamic free area (ventilation capacity)
- Wind load and snow load
- Reliability (number of opening cycles)
- Performance at high temperatures
Smoke vents tested to EN 12101-2 can be used in fire safety design.
What is aerodynamic free area (Aa)?
Aerodynamic free area is the effective ventilation area provided by a smoke vent when open. It is determined through testing according to EN 12101-2 and used by fire engineers to design smoke ventilation systems.
What is geometric opening area?
Geometric opening area is the physical opening size of the hatch (width × length). While sometimes used in national regulations, aerodynamic free area (Aa) is typically used in European standards.
Can a smoke vent also be used for daily ventilation?
Yes, many modern smoke vents can be used for both smoke extraction and daily comfort ventilation, improving indoor air quality during normal operation.
Do smoke vents require maintenance?
Yes, smoke vents are part of the building’s fire safety system and must be inspected regularly. Typically, at least annual testing is recommended to ensure proper opening, closing and system functionality.
How many smoke vents are required in a building?
The number of smoke vents depends on the building size, use and fire safety requirements. The system is usually designed by a fire consultant based on aerodynamic free area (Aa).
Where are smoke vents installed?
Smoke vents are typically installed on roofs or at the highest point of the building, where smoke and heat naturally accumulate. Placement is determined during the design phase.
Can a smoke vent be used as a roof access hatch?
Yes, some smoke vents are designed to also function as roof access hatches for maintenance and inspection, provided they are specified and installed for safe access.
How does a smoke vent open in case of fire?
Smoke vents are usually activated automatically via a fire alarm system or control panel. They can also be operated manually using emergency switches or control buttons.
