Mälarhöjdens Ice Hockey Arena

Bespoke floor hatch for efficient ice handling in a modern ice rink

At Mälarhöjdens Ice Hockey Arena in Stockholm, Elkington supplied a bespoke hydraulic floor hatch designed for the daily operation and maintenance of the ice rink. The hatch was developed to simplify the disposal of ice after games and training sessions, where ice resurfacing machines need to operate safely and efficiently in a demanding environment.

Mälarhöjdens Ice Hockey Arena is a modern facility for ice hockey, figure skating and public skating. The project was built by Peab for Stockholm Stad, and designed with a focus on sustainability, energy efficiency and long-term functionality.

Elkington’s solution supports safe and efficient ice handling while withstanding the high loads created when heavy ice resurfacing machines pass over the hatch.

Products in the project

Elkington supplied:

  • Bespoke hydraulic floor hatch for ice rink environments (HIAC)
  • Double-leaf construction in 316L stainless steel
  • Electric operation with power pack
  • Manual hand pump and remote control
  • Anti-slip surface treatment for safe use
  • IP66-rated solution for protection against water and dust

The client’s needs

Ice rinks place high demands on access solutions. The hatch needed to withstand heavy loads from ice resurfacing machines, perform reliably in a cold and wet environment, and support fast, safe disposal of ice after the rink had been used. For Mälarhöjdens Ice Hockey Arena, it was important to have a robust solution that could be integrated into the floor without disrupting daily operations. The hatch also needed to be easy to operate, safe for maintenance teams and durable enough to handle repeated use over time.

Our solution

Elkington supplied a bespoke hydraulic floor hatch tailored to the specific requirements of the ice rink. The hatch was manufactured in 316L stainless steel, a material with excellent corrosion resistance that is well suited for wet and demanding environments. The construction was designed to withstand the heavy loads from ice resurfacing machines and equipped with a carefully engineered opening function to make ice disposal easier after games and training sessions. The double-leaf hatch was supplied with electric operation, a manual hand pump and remote control for flexible and safe use. To improve safety, the hatch was also fitted with an anti-slip surface treatment, providing better grip in wet or icy conditions. The IP66-rated construction protects against water and dust ingress, contributing to a reliable solution in the challenging environment of an ice rink.

The result

Mälarhöjdens Ice Hockey Arena now has a bespoke hydraulic floor hatch that improves daily operations and simplifies the handling of ice after use. The solution provides safe access, withstands high loads and is adapted to the tough conditions of a modern ice rink. The project demonstrates how Elkington’s bespoke hatches can solve complex access needs in sports and leisure facilities where safety, durability and function must work together.
