Why Is a Smoke Ventilation Hatch Needed?
Smoke hatches are a key component of a building’s fire safety system. When activated during a fire, they create an opening to release smoke and hot gases, improving visibility in escape routes and reducing the risk of smoke inhalation. They also help protect the load-bearing structure from overheating—minimising the risk of structural collapse.
How Does a Smoke Hatch Work?
Smoke hatches can be activated:
– Automatically via smoke detector or fire alarm
– Manually using a push button or emergency release
– (Thermally via fusible link – not applicable in this model)
When opened, a vertical ventilation opening is created, allowing hot air and smoke to escape from the building.
Types of Smoke Ventilation Hatches
– Roof-mounted hatches – Common in stairwells, industrial buildings, shopping centres, and warehouses
– Combined hatches – Serve as both smoke ventilation and access hatches, optionally with comfort ventilation or daylight functionality
Regulations & Requirements
In Sweden, smoke hatches are governed by the Swedish Building Regulations (BBR) and the SS-EN 12101 standard. A properly installed and maintained smoke hatch is often mandatory to meet building permit and insurance requirements.
