What Is an Inspection Hatch Used For?
An inspection hatch in a wall allows easy access to installations hidden behind the wall structure—such as pipes, valves, electrical wiring, or junction boxes. It’s a smart and practical solution that simplifies maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs without requiring demolition.
Advantages of Inspection Hatches
– Service-friendly – provides quick access to technical systems
– Discreet design – visually blends into wall or ceiling finishes
– Secure – can be fitted with various locking options
– Time-saving – reduces the need for wall removal during service
Typical Applications
– Bathrooms and laundry rooms
– Electrical panels and cable ducts
– Technical equipment in public buildings
– Commercial properties with concealed systems
– HVAC and plumbing installations in walls
Materials and Design
Inspection hatches are available in a variety of materials such as steel, gypsum, and aluminium. They can be painted, tile-ready, or designed to be filled with the same finish as surrounding surfaces. Panels come in a range of sizes and can be adapted for installation in both walls and ceilings.
Regulations & Recommendations
In Sweden, installation of inspection hatches is subject to the Swedish Building Regulations (BBR), especially in environments with fire or moisture protection requirements.
Important considerations:
– Fire classification: Fire-rated panels (e.g. EI30 or EI60) are required at fire compartment boundaries
– Moisture classification: In wet areas, hatches must be moisture-resistant and approved by GVK or Säker Vatten
– Accessibility: The hatch must be easy to access and not obstructed by furnishings or building components
